On Spotlight: Trigg County High School

Trigg County school board, administration, parents, citizens, and employers are fully aware of PLTW and committed to the support of the program. They clearly see the direct relationship between investing in PLTW and the long-term return on that investment, even during economic uncertainty and high (16.5%) unemployment county-wide.

PLTW students, Matt Savage and Lance Gilliland, developed a virtual building for the local Economic Development Commission based solely off of a brainstormed community idea. Although the construction is awaiting a new business opportunity, the building design is complete on Revit and is being used on the website and in marketing information sent out to new business recruits for the community. In May 2009, this project was showcased during the STLP State Competition and won a best in showcase award. The hope is new construction and businesses will see the virtual building and envision what their building could look like on the site, ultimately lowering the unemployment rate.

Both of these students, Savage and Gilliland, are looking into Engineering Careers after they graduate in 2010.

Franklin County CTC students from Mark Harrell’s PLTW class, designed and built a cnc/robot work cell table. This table is complete with PC tower holders and controller mounts.

Jan13, 2010 – Jeremy Gardner and Justin Parker, 2 students in Franklin County CTC from Mark Harrell’s class, designed and built a cnc/robot work cell table. This table is complete with PC tower holders and controller mounts

Montaplast, a local automotive factory, donated a bunch of extruded aluminum to PLTW program . Jeremy and Justin designed and built the table using that material and some purchased material. These students had to use existing material to come up with a design. This limited their creative freedom, but also gave them a valuable experience of reusing material. Going green!

Dec 3, 2009 – Scott County High School PLTW Engineering students participated in a boat race, with their PLTW project boats, at the Pavilion in Georgetown, KY.
For their final project, Jean Porter’s Ninth Grade block class of Introduction to Engineering Design chose to design and build single-person boats made out of only cardboard, duct tape, and deck sealant. Using the 12-step engineering design process, students researched the history of great naval disasters to learn what NOT to do, the hydro-dynamic principles for what TO do, and Archimedes Principle to anticipate their design outcomes. They built and tested scale models, mathematical models, and computer models of their boats before building their full-scale final designs. Today, they put their boats in the water and raced them across the pool at the Pavilion in Georgetown.
